Frejus Tunnel
About
Frejus Tunnel is a 12.87 km road tunnel connecting Modane, France, and Bardonecchia, Italy, traversing the Mont Cenis massif. Opened in 1980, it serves as a vital link between the two countries. In July 2025, a second tunnel bore was inaugurated, enhancing capacity and safety. The tunnel is managed by the Société Française du Tunnel Routier du Fréjus (SFTRF) in France and the Società Italiana per il Traforo Autostradale del Frejus (SITAF) in Italy. It is a toll road, with rates varying based on vehicle type and direction. The tunnel is also part of the Alpine Tunnels card system, offering discounts for heavy vehicles.
