Komtar Bus Terminal Step by Step Station Guide The Komtar Bus Terminal is the main transportation hub in George Town, Penang, conveniently located beneath the iconic Komtar Tower. Its central position in George Town also makes it easy to explore nearby attractions such as Prangin Mall, 1st Avenue Mall, and the UNESCO Heritage Zone on foot.

At Komtar, bus services are divided into two main categories:

  • Local Bus (Rapid Penang) – Serving routes across the island, including Batu Ferringhi, Penang Hill, and the airport. Tickets can be purchased on board, and schedules are posted at the terminal.
  • CAT Free Shuttle (Central Area Transit) – A free service for tourists and locals, circulating around George Town’s heritage area with convenient stops near major attractions.

Getting to Komtar Bus Terminal

Around the KOMTAR area, you will see signboards directing you towards the complex. Adjacent to KOMTAR are two major landmarks—1st Avenue Mall and Prangin Mall.

Entrances at Komtar Bus Terminal

KOMTAR Bus Terminal has three main entrances, each leading directly to the terminal.

A glass door entrance can be found on Jalan Ria near CAT Shuttle Station 9. As landmarks, the Dewaniaga Food Court is on one side and the RAPAT RAPAT convenience store on the other.

The Jalan Tek Soon side entrance is accessible from the main Komtar entrance, next to Maybank.

Lastly, the Komtar Complex entrance is located on Level 3 and is connected to several nearby malls. In KOMTAR Complex, walk about 30 meters toward the walkway between KFC and ICT Digital Mall, then turn left.

You’ll see another escalator next to KFC which leads to Level 2 of the bus terminal.

Floor Navigation

Level 1

Level 1 of the KOMTAR Bus Terminal contains the Local Bus and CAT Free Shuttle platforms, as well as several shoplots, restaurants, and access to the street level of the building.

Entry to this floor is either from street level or from the escalators connected to Level 2.

The floor doesn’t have many amenities, aside from several sundry shops and small eateries.

Level 2

Level 2 of the KOMTAR Bus Terminal connects Level 3 and the Level 1 bus platforms. There are several shops and some amenities here.

Level 2 can be accessed by escalator either from Level 3 next to KFC or from Level 1 where the bus platforms are.

Level 3

Level 3 of the KOMTAR Bus Terminal is part of the KOMTAR Complex, containing shops, restaurants, and access to several surrounding malls.

Level 3 can be accessed from the escalator leading from the 2nd floor of the KOMTAR Bus Terminal, as well as other access points such as the ICT Digital Mall.

Ticketing and Boarding

Local Bus

After exiting the glass door from Komtar (Level 1), turn right and you will arrive at the waiting and boarding area for the bus service.

You can pay for bus fare in cash by dropping the money directly into the cash box. Cashless payment options are also available, including Pas Mutiara My50, debit/credit cards, and QR Pay at the cashless machine. After completing payment, the bus driver will provide a receipt.

CAT Free Shuttle

After exiting the glass door from Komtar, turn left and walk about 30 meters along Rapat Rapat Enterprise to Station 9, the boarding/alighting area for the CAT Free Shuttle.

The waiting area is located at Station 9. The Central Area Transit (CAT) Free Shuttle will stop here, making it easy to hop on and head to your next destination at no cost.

Exit and Taxi

Exit to Jalan Ria

If you disembark from the local bus, walk straight toward the glass door next to Dewaniaga Food Court. Enter through the glass door and exit on the other side to reach Jalan Ria.

If you disembark from the CAT Free Shuttle at Station 9, you are already at Jalan Ria.

There is a taxi stand on Jalan Ria, situated on the street between Prangin Mall and the UTC building. It’s about an 80-meter walk from the bus terminal.

Exit to Jalan Tek Soon

Take the escalator next to the Bata store on Level 2 to reach the exit to Tek Soon Street.

There is also a taxi stand on Tek Soon Street, about 20 meters from the Komtar Bus Terminal, right next to the Happy Mart shop.

Exit to Komtar Complex

Take the escalator up to Level 3. Once there, KFC will be on your right and ICT Digital Mall on your left. This is the Komtar Complex entrance, which links malls, local eateries, and other attractions within Komtar.
